FL Div 1: Na Fianna win in Baconstown

Na Fianna came out on top in this Div 1 FL Round 2 encounter, played in a mix of showers and sunshine in Baconstown on Saturday afternoon.

The home side were off to a quick start, with two points on the board within ninety seconds. Craig Munnelly O’Toole found the net in the third minute, briefly giving Navan O’Mahony’s the lead until Na Fianna scored two points from play in the sixth and ninth minutes.

Two points from corner forward Jake Regan, from a free and from play put Navan O’Mahony’s ahead again but three points in five minutes put the home side ahead with ten minutes to go. Na Fianna could have had more scores in this period, only for a textbook block from Darragh Murphy to deny a goal in the sixteenth minute and a clearance from the same player in the eighteenth,

Regan converted another free in the twenty fourth minute, but Na Fianna, aided by a strong wind, kicked five unanswered points before half time and went in at the interval at double scores.

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-03 Na Fianna 0-12

Na Fianna got off to a perfect start in the second half, increasing their lead to nine points with a goal four minutes after the resumption. 

O’Toole and Evan Brady added scores for Navan O’Mahony’s but these were soon nullified at the opposite end of the pitch. From 15 to 25 minutes in the second half was Navan O’Mahony’s best period, kicking five points in this time from Regan, Conor Finnegan, Oisin O’Brien and Robbie Keelaghan. O’Briens touch was narrowly over the bar and indeed could have found the net. In this period also, netminder Niall Devlin saved a penalty.
