Na Fianna win Senior Camogie Championship

History is made as Na Fianna win Senior Camogie Championship!

Saturday 5th October is a day that will go down in Na Fianna CLG’s history. Many tears of joy were shed as the final whistle was blown to see Na Fianna stop Kilmessan’s reign and their aim for 11 in a row by winning the Senior Camogie County Final for the first time ever.

From the start, it was evident that Na Fianna were determined to bring the cup back to Baconstown/Enfield. The first half was neck in neck with Kilmessan getting the 1st score of the game followed by Na Fianna’s 3 point to lead the game. Kilmessan followed shortly with 2 quick points to draw the game and minutes to half time followed through to the Na Fianna net.

Na Fianna retaliated with a point to bring the half time score to: Na Fianna 0-04 to Kilmessan 1-04.

The second half began with Na Fianna upping the tempo to the max. With points from Erin Leddy and Emma Regan, Na Fianna were getting more and more hope as the end drew near. But the team had to remain focused till the bitter end.

With Kilmessan scoring just 2 points in the second half, 1 from play and 1 from a free, Na Fianna fought on with everything they had left in the tank and with an excellent Sophie Healy point and Erin Leddy frees, Na Fianna could nearly see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Tension grew as a throw in was given on near the 21” line infront of the Na Fianna goals which was in the end gracefully won by Sophia Payne and flown back down the field. The tension didn’t end there as it was nearly 2 minutes over time and Kilmessan received a 21” free right infront of the goals. With the final seconds remaining, the Na Fianna backs lined the goals as it was thought Kilmessan would attempt a goal, but a point was attempted and sent wide.

As Na Fianna goalie Katie Mulvihill was about to puck out the ball, the referee called for the sliotar and blew the final whistle to see Na Fianna crowned Meath Senior Camogie County Champions for the first time and to see Na Fianna CLG win their first ever Senior Cup.

The Na Fianna supporters wasted no time and invaded the pitch immediately to congratulate the team and management. Winning was something that not only the team wanted badly, it was the Na Fianna Club as a whole wanted and it will no doubt be a moment everyone will remember for many years to come.
