SHC Rd.1- One Point Victory for Na Fianna Hurlers

1st Round Success for Na Fianna Hurlers!

    Senior Hurling Championship
    Na Fianna v Blackhall Gaels

The last day of June saw the Na Fianna Hurlers play their 1st game in the senior ranks after an absence of a couple of years. Windy conditions prevailed and Na Fianna played against a strong wind in the first half. Blackhall Gaels used the wind well and they were the first off the mark with a free. Na Fianna were guilty of a number of wides but were boosted when Barry Slevin scored a goal from a free in the 5th minute.

Blackhall Gaels responded well and used the wind to their advantage scoring a further 3 points from distance and retook the lead by the 12th minute. They increased their advantage by another 2 points before landing their first goal in the 20th minute giving them a 6 point lead. Na Fianna were finding it difficult to settle and deal with the wind in the first half and were guilty of some poor play. Openings that were created caught the wind and sailed wide of the target. Blackhall Gaels managed the conditions better and scored another 2 long range frees.

Na Fianna had a small glimmer of hope when Mark Slevin rounded his marker and scored Na Fianna's 2nd Goal. Blackhall Gaels were to finish the half with another point and a second goal giving them a 9 point half time lead.

Half Time Score: Blackhall Gaels 2 goals 9 points to Na Fianna 2 goals.

Na Fianna came out in the second half more focused and with the wind behind them they looked more dangerous from the off. They were the first to score when Ronan Byrne delivered a sideline cut straight to Barry Slevin who scored Na Fianna's 3rd goal.

Blackhall Gaels were awarded a penalty early in the second half. Eoin Reilly in the Na Fianna goals made a terrific save and this appeared to boost their confidence. Blackhall Gaels though responded well and scored the next three points of the game. Ronan Byrne of Na Fianna scored the next point and this seemed to turn the game in their favour. Na Fianna using the wind to their advantage now they scored 7 unanswered points ( Barry Slevin , Seán Martin, Johnny McCloskey and Mark Slevin) bringing the gap to 1 point. A free from Mark Slevin in the 20th minute brought Na Fianna Level. Blackhall Gaels were finding scores difficult to get against the wind but they managed 1 further point in the game putting them ahead again.

But with time nearly up Na Fianna won a free which Mark Slevin converted to bring Na Fianna Level. With time running out Peter Slevin scored a disputed point. The Blackhall Gaels bench disputed the score. The Referee consulted the umpires and the point stood. Na Fianna did get one more chance but they hit the post. When the referee blew the
final whistle Na Fianna had managed to turn the 9 point half time deficit to a 1 point victory.

Na Fianna finished the game with 3 goals 11 points to Blackhall Gaels 2 goals 13 points
