U21HC Final: Na Fianna 1-09, Ratoath 1-11

Na Fianna Unlucky in U21 Final

Na Fianna and Ratoath met in the U21 Hurling Championship Final in Dunganny last Tuesday night. It had been over three weeks since Na Fianna played the semi-final against Kildalkey. They were waiting patiently to see the results of Ratoath’s U21 footballers in their championship campaign and their senior hurling team were also in the Division 1 League Final which they won.

Na Fianna knew they would have a tough battle on their hands coming into the final, especially when most of the Ratoath players had competitive games under their belt and were in winning form. Na Fianna was also missing two county players from their starting fifteen. True to the character of the Na Fianna players, they soldiered on and put in a valiant performance to the bitter end.

Na Fianna started the first half at a blistering pace but will rue not making more of the chances they had. They hit two consecutive wides before Ratoath registered a score. On another day and with more games under their belt, these points would have gone over. Points were exchanged between the sides which were not easily got by either side. Half time saw both teams level pegging, Na Fianna 0-4, Ratoath 0-4.

The second half was a thrilling encounter as both teams were nip and tuck. It was only in the last two minutes of injury time that saw Ratoath point a free and notch a score form play to leave two points the margin. There just wasn’t enough time on the clock for Na Fianna to come back. Each and every Na Fianna player gave everything they could to try muster out Ratoath, but unfortunately, it just wasn’t to be for them on this occasion.

    Na Fianna 1-09, Ratoath 1-11.

Seven of the starting fifteen are on the minor winning team and only two players are 21, this shows that this team are heading in the right direction and good things are on the way for them.

The Na Fianna players and mentors should be very proud of themselves, as this group of young players put in a gallant performance given their heartache.

It is great to see adult hurlers mentoring this U21 team. Fair play to joint managers; Diarmuid Bailey and Eoin Reilly with selectors Christy Cosgrave and Daniel Gleeson, they brought leadership to this team.

Na Fianna CLG congratulates Ratoath on their win and very much appreciates the sporting manner of the Ratoath players, mentors and club.
