MHC Div 1 Final: Na Fianna Clinch MHC Crown

n a year when the club lost a number of finals, Na Fianna were rewarded with a thrilling MHC win over Killyon/Longwood Sunday at Pairc Tailteann

    Na Fianna ............... 2-11
    Longwood/Kiltale ...... 0-14

Goals in each half were central to Na Fianna's success with the second coming in the 59th minute after their lead had been trimmed to the minimum.

Oisin Coffey scrambled home the second one at the old swimming pool end to leave the board reading 2-11 to 0-13.

Having seen a free from the wing and a sideline go wide, Longwood/Killyon's Mikie Mullen posted the last score from a close range stoppage time free that skied over the bar.

Mullen registered all of Longwood/Kiltale's total with 10 points coming from frees.

Na Fianna finished with eight scorers from play. All bar two points came from play. They were never headed while the scores were tied just once. One of Mullen's three points from play left it 0-13 to 1-10 with 53 minutes gone.

Na Fianna's response was a Kean Martin effort from play before Coffey's goal settled matters.

After the exciting climax to the football decider, there was a low key opening to the main event. Na Fianna's Kean Flynn saw an early free rebound off an upright. In the seventh minute he provided the opening for Shane Walsh to goal at the town end.

With breeze behind them Na Fianna moved five points clear by the 21st minute, 1-4 to 0-2. When Luke Kelly got off the mark in the 25th minute it was 1-6 to 0-2 and all six Na Fianna forwards were on the scoresheet.

Mikie Mullen pulled two points (free, 65) back for Longwood/Kiltale in the run-in to the break when Na Fianna led their neighbours by 1-6 to 0-4.

Mikie Mullen's nine second-half points were one of the highlights of the hour but weren't enough to secure to overhaul Na Fianna,.

He pointed twice (one free) with three minutes of resumption. Kevin Coffey countered with a brace of points from play before the 35th minute elapsed.

Na Fianna were double scores ahead after 37 minutes, 1-9 to 0-6. Longwood/Killyon outscored them by 0-7 to 0-1 over the next 16 minutes but couldn't eliminate the deficit.
